Buying tyres is probably not the most exciting purchase we will make and is usually something we put off until the very last moment.
Not a huge surprise but when you realise that the only contact your tyre has with the road surface fits on to an A4 piece of paper it becomes clear why we need to get right.
Although the legal minimum depth is 1.6mm, across three quarters of the tread width around the full circumference, a tyre’s ability to grip – especially in wet weather – deteriorates well before that. We recommend you consider replacing your tyres when the depth is no less than 2-3mm, bearing in mind a new tyre depth is around 8mm.
It’s also worth pointing out that the penalty for running on illegal tyres is now 3 penalty points and a fine of £2500 per tyre. So how can you avoid the risk of a heavy fine or worse? As we said earlier, buying tyres is usually a real chore. It can also be difficult to choose between budget and premium as they all look the same.
The good news is that it has recently become much easier to select the ‘right’ tyres. In 2012 the EU introduced standardised labelling showing fuel efficiency, wet grip and road noise and now Grahams Tyres has launched ‘easy tyre quote’ – a brand new way to help you choose the ‘right’ tyre.
Gone are the days when you had to know the size and specification of your tyre, phone round different dealers to find the ‘best price’ and then book a fitting time – and all depending on whether they had them in stock.
Now you simply go to the ‘easy tyre quote’ box on the right, select your nearest branch, type in your registration number and click ‘search’ and within seconds you are presented with a choice of tyres and prices – ranging from budget to premium. Book on line and pay after fitting – how easy is that?
